CFH First Draft: Mary L Scott Taylor

Mary L Scott is the 97th person in a descendant report beginning with the earliest known ancestor of our Callin family, (1.) James Callin. This descendant report uses the Register Style of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society.

Fifth Generation

97. Mary L Scott (James-4, Sarah Callin-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 29 June 1860 and grew up in Harrison, Winnebago County, Illinois.

Mary and Albert Taylor were married in 1890. Albert, son of John G Taylor (1828–1881) and Frances A Gleason (1838–1917), was born on 12 Nov 1861 and grew up in Rockton, Winnebago County, Illinois. He married his first wife, Emma Jane Gummow (1861–1887),  on 24 Dec 1885 in Winnebago County, Illinois, but she died suddenly in Rockton on 9 Nov 1887.

Albert and Mary farmed and raised their only daughter in Shirland, and were together for nearly fifty years. Albert died on 9 June 1939 at the age of 77 in Shirland, and was buried on 11 June 1939 in North Burritt Cemetery in Winnebago County, Illinois.

The Freeport Journal-Standard of Freeport, Illinois, ran his obituary on 10 June 1939

“Shirland, Ill., June 10.--Albert Taylor, 76, died last night at his home. Mr. Taylor was born in Rockton township Nov. 12 1862, the son of John and Frances Taylor. Surviving are his widow, Mary; a daughter, Lottie Wicks; a grand-daughter, Ginda [sic] Studlar; a great-grandson, Leroy Studlar, and two nieces, Helen Taylor and Vivian Cannell. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Methodist church in Shirland. Burial will be in Burritt cemetery.”


Mary remained in Shirland and died there on 12 Apr 1947 at the age of 86. She was buried on 16 Apr 1947 in North Burritt Cemetery with her husband. Her obituary ran in the Monroe Evening Times in Monroe, Wisconsin, on 14 Apr 1947.

“Mrs. Mary Taylor Dies

“Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Mary Taylor, 86, Shirland, Ill., a life-long resident of that vicinity, who is a cousin of Mrs. Violet Morton. Mrs. Taylor was here April 1 for a birthday party on Mrs. Iva Denny. Mrs. Taylor is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lottie Wicks, Rockford, a brother and sister, Lum Scott and Mrs. Ina Peck, Shirland; one grandchild. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon in the Shirland Methodist church, with burial at Britt [sic] cemetery. Mrs. Morton and Mrs. Denny will attend the funeral.”


Albert Taylor and Mary Scott had the following child:


308 i. Charlotte B "Lottie" Taylor, born Mar 1892, Illinois; married (303) Walter Scott Wicks abt 1913,  died 27 Dec 1959, Winnebago County, Illinois.
