Fifth Generation

92. Charles A Scott (George-4, Sarah Callin-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 28 Mar 1858 in Iowa, and grew up in Harrison, Winnebago County, Illinois.

Charles married Elisabeth C "Lizzie" Cowan in 1881. Lizzie was a daughter of James S Cowan and Elmira Vail. She was born in June 1862 and grew up in Harrison, Winnebago County, Illinois. Records do not suggest that James S. Cowan, an Irish immigrant born around 1805, is related to the other Cowan families listed in this volume.

Charles and Lizzie had four children in 12 years, all of whom were born in the Harrison and Rockford area. Charles ran an "express and feed barn" at 314 Elm street in Rockford during the early 1900s. In 1910 the family appeared in Paris, Howard County, Iowa, where the household included their two younger sons, Harold and Ray, and Lizzie's widowed sister, Hattie. By 1920 they were living in Walhalla, Pembina County, North Dakota, within a few miles of the Canadian border.

Charles died on 11 Apr 1940 at the age of 82 and was buried in Walhalla Hillside Cemetery in Walhalla, Pembina County, North Dakota. Lizzie remained in Walhalla, died on 9 July 1957 at the age of 95, and was buried with Charles in Walhalla Hillside Cemetery.

Charles A Scott and Elisabeth C "Lizzie" Cowan had the following children:

295 i. Emery Scott, born 26 Mar 1884, Harrison, Winnebago County, Illinois; married Marian Louise Schuster, 20 Apr 1909, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois; married Fahy William, 9 Feb 1922, Kane County, Illinois.

296 ii. Louis H Scott, born 23 Nov 1889, Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois; married Althea Elizabeth Prindle, 1909, Boone County, Illinois; died 19 Apr 1974, Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois.

297 iii. Harold Scott, born 30 Nov 1891, Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois; died 29 Dec 1985, Leonard, Cass County, North Dakota.

iv. Ray Scott was born on 15 Oct 1896 in Harrison, Winnebago County, Illinois, moving with his family to Iowa and then to Walhalla, Pembina County, North Dakota. Ray was inducted at Cavalier, the county seat of Pembina County, North Dakota, on 29 March 1918. He was sent to Camp Dodge, Iowa, and served in Headquarters Company, 137th Infantry, until 30 January 1919. The rest of his time in service, he was attached to Company D, 137th Infantry, and he shipped overseas aboard the ship Missanabie, serving in Europe from 3 May 1918 to 23 April 1919. Ray's unit was part of the massive Meuse-Argonne Offensive and served in the Defensive Sector at Gerardmer (Alsace) and Grange-le-Comte (Lorraine). Ray was discharged from Camp Dodge, Iowa, on 6 May 1919, as a Private.

After the war, Ray appears to have worked in construction, living in different North Dakota towns, but usually residing with his parents, or at least listing them as his permanent address. He died on 17 Mar 1958 at the age of 61 in Imperial County, California, and was buried in Walhalla City Cemetery, Walhalla, Pembina County, North Dakota.
