Fifth Generation

93. Mercy Elizabeth "Libbie" Scott (George-4, Sarah Callin-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 23 May 1860. She was named Mercy Elizabeth, after her maternal grandmother, Mercy Yaw, but she favored the name Elizabeth, which was shortened to the nickname "Libbie."

Sometime before the 1880 Census, Libbie married Alfred Johnson. Alfred was the son of John Faust (or Johnson) and Christine Jacobs (of Jacobsen), born on 28 Nov 1855 in Småland, Sweden. He arrived in the United States on 23 Oct 1871 on a ship called the England, along with two sisters, Matilda and Ida Faust. It seems that when they arrived in the U.S., Alfred followed the Scandinavian tradition of taking his father's first name as his surname (ie, "John's son") rather than keeping the name Faust.

(N.B.: There is at least one other “Alfred Johnson” reflected in the records. “Alfred S. Johnson” was born in Illinois in 1855 and died in Rockford on 1 Dec 1932, just three days before our Alfred.)

Alfred and Libbie farmed in Burritt, Winnebago County, Illinois, and had five children - three of whom survived to adulthood. Libbie died on 9 Apr 1898 at the age of 37 and was buried in North Burritt Cemetery in Winnebago County, Illinois. Alfred and his three surviving children remained in Harrison.

On 30 Apr 1901, Alfred married Mary Ellen Higginbottom (1857–1936), the widow of Andre Andrew (1845–1892), in Winnebago County, Illinois. They lived  in Lamont, Sheridan County, North Dakota in 1910, but by 1920 they had divorced, and Alfred lived with his sister, Matilda, and her husband in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois.

Alfred married Marie Peterson (1857–1944) in 1921 in Boone County, Illinois. They lived in Harlem, Winnebago County in 1930. He died on 4 Dec 1932 at the age of 77 in Rockford, and was buried on 6 Dec 1932 in North Burritt Cemetery in Winnebago County, Illinois. Marie lived in Rockford, and died there  at the age of 87 on 2 Oct 1944. She was buried in North Burritt Cemetery.
