CFH First Draft: Christopher Columbus Scott

Christopher Columbus Scott is the 96th person in a descendant report beginning with the earliest known ancestor of our Callin family, (1.) James Callin. This descendant report uses the Register Style of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society.

Fifth Generation

96. Christopher Columbus Scott (James-4, Sarah Callin-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 2 Oct 1857 and grew up in Harrison, Winnebago County, Illinois.

Columbus married Ellen Maria "Kitty" Putman on 14 Feb 1877. Kitty, daughter of Stephen C Putnam (1833–1879) and Susan Caroline Wheeler (1836–1889), was born on 23 Mar 1861 in Laona, Winnebago County, Illinois, and grew up in Harrison. After they married, Lum farmed in Harrison and Kitty taught school.

Kitty died on 3 May 1944 at the age of 83 in Shirland, and was buried on 5 May 1944 in North Burritt Cemetery, Winnebago County, Illinois. Her obituary ran in the Rockford, Illinois Register-Republic on 4 May 1944:

“Funeral services for Mrs. Kit Putnam Scott, 83, lifelong resident of Winnebago county who died Wednesday at her home in Shirland, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Bethel church near Harrison. Burial will be in Burritt cemetery.

“A former school teacher at Harrison. Mrs. Scott was born March 10, 1861, in Harrison township, the daughter of Stephen and Cal Putman. She married Columbus Scott in 1879. She was a charter member of the Woman's club and the Bethel church.

“Surviving besides her husband are several nieces and nephews.”


Lum died on 26 Dec 1947 at the age of 90 in Shirland, and was buried on 28 Dec 1947 in Burritt Township, Winnebago County, Illinois. His obituary ran in the Freeport Journal-Standard of Freeport, Illinois, on 27 Dec 1947.

“Durand, Ill., Dec. 27.--Columbus Scott, of Shirland, passed away at his home Thursday morning at 9:30.

“He was born at Harrison, Ill., Oct. 2, 1857, the son of James and Charlotte Scott, pioneer residents of Winnebago county. He was married to Ellen Putnam. Feb. 14, 1877. The couple farmed at Harrison until two years ago when his wife died.

“A sister Mrs. Joseph Peck, with whom he resided, survives. A sister Mrs. Mary Taylor died last April. Funeral Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Chapin funeral home and burial will be in North Burritt cemetery.”
