Fourth Generation

19. Sarah Montgomery (Elizabeth Callen-3, James "2nd"-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 27 Dec 1824 in Olivesburg, Richland, Ohio. She moved with her family to Newcastle, Fulton County, Indiana, around 1837, where she married William Henry Davidson on 22 Apr 1841. Henry Davidson was born on 28 May 1818 in Michigan, or in Wayne County, Ohio.

The Davidsons farmed in Newcastle, and after Sarah’s sister Mary died, they took in their orphaned niece, Sarah Elizabeth Ferrell. In 1852, the Davidsons set out for Oregon as part of the Murphy Train. Captained by John Ecles Murphy, the group consisted of family and friends, all members of the Christian Church known as Campbellites or Disciples of Christ.  In the early 1830s, the followers of Alexander Campbell, founder of the Disciples of Christ, moved from their homes in Warren County, Kentucky to Warren County, Illinois, and established the town of Monmouth, named after their home in Monmouth, Wales.  As the word of the virtues of the Oregon Territory reached Illinois, the group began planning another move.  An advanced migration of church members went west in 1850, which included Elijah and Margaret Davidson (of unknown relation to William Henry Davidson). In April 1852, the second migration of church members began the journey.  This second group was made up of the families of Burford, Butler, Davidson, Lucas, Mason, Murphy, Roundtree and included Henry and Sarah Davidson and their children, as well as their adopted niece, Sarah Ferrell.

The Davidson family settled in what is now Halsey, Linn County, Oregon, where the two youngest children, Samuel and Mary, were born. Sarah and Henry lived out their days in Linn County.

Henry died on 19 Feb 1894 at the age of 75 and was buried in the Pugh Cemetery in Shedd, Linn County.  Sarah remained in Halsey until moving to South Lebanon, Linn County, by 1910, and she died there on 8 May 1918 at the age of 93 and was buried near her husband.
