Fifth Generation

63. Sarah Elizabeth Ferrell (Mary Montgomery-4, Elizabeth Callen-3, James "2nd"-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 20 Jan 1846 in Indiana. After her mother died, she lived with her aunt and uncle, Sarah (Montgomery) and Henry Davidson, in Newcastle, Fulton County, Indiana, and joined them when they took to the Oregon Trail in 1852. They settled in Harrisburg, Linn County, Oregon.

Sarah married three times in the space of a few years. Her first husband was Josiah S Powell (1839–1865), son of Noah Powell (1808–1875) and Mary E. "Polly" Smith (1812–1893), and he was born on 19 Nov 1839 in Menard County, Illinois. The Powell family wagon train, led by Noah and his two brothers, was one of the largest groups to migrate along the Oregon Trail, departing Illinois in 1851. Josiah and Sarah probably married in 1864, as she would have just turned 18 that year. Their son was born in Mar 1865 and Josiah died at 26 years of age on 21 Nov 1865. He was buried in Hunsaker Cemetery in Marion, Marion County, Oregon.

Josiah S Powell and Sarah Elizabeth Ferrell had the following child:

214 i. Glenn O Farrell Powell, born 19 Mar 1865, Albany, Linn County, Oregon; married Arvilla Howard, 1887; married Alice Jane Waud, 18 Dec 1920, Lane County, Oregon; died 17 Apr 1948, San Francisco, San Francisco County, California.

Sarah Elizabeth Ferrell and E J S Page were married on 4 Aug 1867 in Marion County, Oregon. We know nothing about Mr. Page beyond his name; we do not even know what his initials stood for. A child and a marriage record are all he left behind.

E J S Page and Sarah Elizabeth Ferrell had the following child:

215 ii. Sarah Olive Page, born 14 May 1868, Junction City, Lane County, Oregon; married Walter Byron Beebe, 1889; died 1 Mar 1968, Bishop, Inyo County, California.

Sarah Elizabeth Ferrell and James Addison Bushnell were married on 2 Apr 1870 in Linn County, Oregon. James was the son of Daniel Bushnell (d. 1843) and Ursula B Pratt (1789-1883), born on 16 (or 27) July 1826 in Cattaraugus County, New York.

As of this writing, James has a Wikipedia article which describes his migration west this way:

“He crossed the plains in the spring of 1852 to Oregon and then on to California. He departed for home in July 1853 via ship from San Francisco and across Nicaragua to New York to Missouri to get his family, only to discover they had already left for Oregon. He then returned to Oregon via ship from New York across Panama, back to Portland where he joined them in Springfield in Oct 1853. Thus, he covered over 10,000 miles in less than 120 days. His first wife, Elizabeth C. Adkins, whom he married in Sep 1849 in Missouri and who died in Jan 1868 in Junction City, was part of the ‘Lost Wagon Train of 1853’ that came over the Cascades via the Elliott Cutoff. He married his second wife, Sarah E. Page in Apr 1870.”

James and his first wife had seven children together before Elizabeth’s death in 1868:

  • Charles Alvah Bushnell (1851–1874)

  • Lucy G Bushnell (1854–1937)

  • Ursula Josephine Bushnell (1857–1859)

  • Mary Elizabeth Bushnell (1859–1859)

  • William Francis Bushnell (1860–1865)

  • Helen V. Bushnell (1862–1935)

  • George Addison Bushnell (1867–1882)

On his arrival in Oregon, James took a donation land claim of 320 acres near Clear Lake. In Dec 1855 he started the first school in that part of Lane County. In 1864, he expanded the farm to 800 acres. He settled in Junction City in 1875, where he operated a grain warehouse for 35 years. His historic Junction City house is still standing. He established the pioneer Farmers & Merchants Bank in 1893, along with C. W. Washburne, and served as its president until his death on 8 Apr 1912 at the age of 85.

The first library at Eugene Divinity School was named the Bushnell Library, as James and his wife Sarah provided $1,000 for the purchase of rare bibles. The Sarah E. Bushnell Bible and Rare Book Collection, established in 1913, is now housed in the Kellenberger Library at Northwest Christian University, successor to Eugene Divinity School.

Sarah died on 29 Jan 1916 at the age of 70 in Junction City, Lane County, Oregon. She and James are buried in the Luper Cemetery. Her obituary appeared in The Oregon Daily Journal in Portland, Oregon, on 2 Feb 1916.

“Pioneer of Lane Dies.

“Junction City, Or., Feb. 2--Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Bushnell, aged 70 years, died here at the home of her daughter, January 29, after a brief illness. The funeral was held from the Christian church Tuesday. Mrs. Bushnell had lived in Lane county since 1869. Her husband, Addison Bushnell, died about three years ago. She leaves four children: Mrs. Ollie Beebe, Ashland, Oregon; Glen O. Powell of Portland, Or.; H.C. Bushnell and Mrs. Gertrude Movius of Junction City, Oregon.”

James Addison Bushnell and Sarah Elizabeth Ferrell had the following children:

216 iii. Henry Clay Bushnell, born Nov 1871, Oregon; married Livva Skaggs, 1896; died 30 Jan 1933, Junction City, Lane County, Oregon.

iv. Walter Scott Bushnell was born on 15 Nov 1873 in Oregon. He died at the age of 8 and was buried in Luper Cemetery in Lane County, Oregon. James and Sarah lost three of their children to diphtheria that winter. Henry came home from school in early December ill with the disease. He survived, but Walter died 24 Dec 1881, Mary died 31 Dec 1881 and George Addison "Addie" (son of James’s first wife) died 10 Jan 1882.

v. Albert Bushnell, born Jan 1876; died 1 Oct 1876 and buried in Luper Cemetery.
