Fourth Generation

58. Zimri G. Callin (William H.-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 10 Dec 1850 in Monroeville, Huron County, Ohio, and grew up on his parents farm in Ridgefield, Huron County. After the family moved to Wood County in 1861, he lived in Plain Township.

Zimri and Ella Franklin were married on 18 Feb 1874 in Weston, Wood County. Ella was the  daughter of Francis Almon Franklin (1831–1900) and Hellen Baldwin (1839–1917), born on 3 Apr 1855 in Wood County, Ohio. She grew up in Washington Township, Wood County.

Ella died on 10 Jul 1875 at the age of 20 from a postnatal infection and was buried in Old Weston Cemetery in Weston, Wood County. Zimri and his infant son, Eddie, went to live with his parents in Plain Township.

Zimri G. Callin and Ella Franklin had one child:

i. Edward Milton Callin was born on 10 Jul 1875 in Plain Township, Wood, Ohio. He enlisted in the army on 16 May 1899. He served in the brief Spanish-American War, and returned to Ohio when it ended; newspaper accounts suggest that he suffered from what we would now likely recognize as post-traumatic stress disorder. After he was arrested for public outbursts and substance abuse in Bowling Green and Hamilton, he was hospitalized in Cincinnati. He died in Jul 1902 at the age of 27 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, and was buried with his mother in the Old Weston Cemetery.

Zimri G. Callin and Minnie E. Parker were married on 9 Apr 1881 in Henry County, Ohio. Minnie E. Parker, daughter of Samuel Parker and Mary Jane Burr, was born on 18 May 1864 in Clyde, Sandusky County, Ohio.

Zimri, already an established saddler, relocated his family to Holgate, Henry County, Ohio, where two of his daughters were born. They lived in Madison, Williams County, Ohio in 1900, but must have returned to Bowling Green soon after that, as Zimri died there on 10 Aug 1907 at the age of 56 and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio.

Zimri's obituary appeared on page 4 of The Daily Sentinel Tribune on 10 August 1907, with the headline "Death Claims Father on Eve of the Annual Reunion":

"Zimri G. Callin died this morning about nine o'clock following an operation for intestinal trouble. He had not enjoyed good health for the past year, since recovering from an attack of typhoid fever, but was not taken down until Tuesday night. He grew worse and an operation was deemed necessary. He was removed to the sanitarium on Main street Friday night in Ickes & Stahl's ambulance and at eleven o’clock, the operation took place. It was quickly seen that the end was at hand, although it was thought he would live the day out.

“The funeral will be held on Monday afternoon at about two o'clock at the home of his brother, G.W. Callin, on the corner of Pearl and Buttonwood ave. Rev. Mr. Shanks, of Weston, pastor of the Carr church, officiating. Interment will be made in Oak Grove cemetery. Deceased was a well-known farmer residing on the Sand Ridge road about five and a half miles west of town. He had pursued agricultural as an occupation for the past nine years. Previous to that he had been a harness maker, having had a shop here in 1872, and at different times in Tontogany, Custer and Holgate.

“Zimri G. Callin was born in Huron county, near Monroeville on Dec. 10, 1850. He came with his father, William Callin and family to Wood county in 1862 where he resided on the Waller farm on the Sandusky road, until about the time he was married in 1872.

“He wedded Ella Franklin, a niece of Edward Baldwin of Weston, and one son was born to them, Edward Milton, who died in 1902, his mother dying in 1873.

“In 1882 he was married to Miss Minnie Parker of Holgate. Mr. Callin leaves his wife, two daughters and one son. Miss Della, Mrs. Clyde Meek and Harry, one little daughter, Nellie, dying in infancy during his residence at Holgate. He also leaves two brothers, George W. Callin, of this city, and John Callin of Fostoria. His sister, Mrs. Harriett Sly died only last Xmas time.

“A year ago the Callin family held their reunion in this city and on August 14th they were to have held another reunion at Chicago Junction. Coming at this time, the last event in the career of one who was loved by all his relatives, casts even a darker shadow, if possible, then [sic] would otherwise have fallen.”

Minnie remained in Bowling Green, and in 1919 she began working at the Juvenile Home, where she served for 18 years. She lived in Bowling Green, but she died on 14 Sep 1939 at the age of 75 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. She was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery with her husband.

Minnie’s obituary appeared in the Daily Sentinel Tribune; 1939, Sep 16; p 1 c 8:

“Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie Callin, 75, beloved matron at the Juvenile Home here for 18 years, will be held this afternoon at 2:30 at Deck's Funeral Home with the Rev. W. W. Constein officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

“Mrs. Callin, a resident of Wood County since 1900 died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Young, of Toledo, Thursday morning at 10:00 after a long illness. She had resigned from the Juvenile Home position here three years ago because of failing health.

“Minnie Burr [sic] was born at Clyde, O., May 18, 1864, and died at the age of 75 years, 3 months and 27 days. She was married to Zimri Callin at Holgate, O., and they came to Wood County in 1900, living west of Bowling Green. To this union were born four children, three of whom survive while a daughter, Nellie, died at the age of three years.

“Mr. Callin preceded his loving wife in death in 1908.

“Mrs. Callin went to work at the Juvenile Home here in 1919 and 18 years of service there found her taking many unfortunate children into her life as her own. She shared her delightful personality and love with every child with whom she came in contact over the long 18-year period.

“Her careful council and earnest Christian teachings made its mark in the lives of many.

“A member of the Methodist Church here, she lived close to the doctrines of the Christian faith.

“Besides her daughter, Mrs. Fred Young, of Toledo, she is survived by another daughter, Mrs. A. G. Shroyer, of Portage, and a son, Harry Callin, of Sandusky.”
