57. Hugh H. Callin, Dr. (William H.-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 16 May 1848 and grew up in Peru, Huron County, Ohio, and Ridgefield, Huron County. His family moved to Wood County in 1861, and Hugh lived in Plain Township, Wood County, Ohio in 1870. He received his teacher’s certificate from the Wood County Board of Examiners in 1871, and took his degree, specializing  in neuralgia in 1878.

Hugh and Sarah A Leonard were married on 20 Apr 1879 in Wood County, Ohio. Sarah was the daughter of Henry Leonard (1812–1889) and Anna Smothers (1817–1866), born on 10 Nov 1845 in Republic, Seneca County, Ohio, and raised in Liberty, Fairfield County, Ohio.

The young couple set up their home in Portage, Wood County, Ohio in 1880. Sadly, Hugh died on 12 Sep 1880 at the age of 32 in Portage, Wood, Ohio. He was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Bowling Green. Sarah remarried on 6 Sep 1888 to Oziah B Culver (1853–1930) in Wood County. She died on 17 Nov 1900 at the age of 51 and was buried with Hugh in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Hugh’s obituary appeared in the Wood County Sentinel on 16 Sep 1880.

“Dr. H. H. Callin, of Portage, who has been, for several weeks prostrated, breathed his last, Sunday about noon.  There has been a slight difference of opinion among the doctors as to his ailment, but after a post mortem examination, on Monday, by Drs. Tuller and Lincoln, of this place, they pronounced his ailment sick stomach, as they had done at the beginning of his sickness.  Deceased was a man about 32 years of age, a graduate of the Cincinnati Surgical and Medical College, who had established quite a large practice already, and gave promise of a life of usefulness, both in his profession and as a citizen.  The body of deceased was brought to the cemetery in this place for burial Tuesday forenoon.”
