CFH First Draft: John F Callin

John F Callin is the 61st person in a descendant report beginning with the earliest known ancestor of our Callin family, (1.) James Callin. This descendant report uses the Register Style of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society.

Fourth Generation

61. John F Callin (Hugh-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born in 1850 and grew up in Milton Township, Ashland County, Ohio. His family moved to Vermillion, Ashland County, by 1870.

John and Catherine Ann Steigerwalt were married on 26 May 1879 in Ashland County, Ohio. Catherine Ann Steigerwalt, daughter of Joseph Steigerwalt and Mary Gambert, was born on 5 Sep 1847 in Pennsylvania. Catherine’s family lived in West Penn, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, and after the Civil War, she moved west, marrying her first husband, William A. Ohl, in Richland County, Ohio, on 24 Apr 1865.

William’s family lived in Milton Township, and after he and Catherine married, they settled for a while near Springfield, Allen County, Indiana, before returning to Ashland, Ohio. William died at some point after the birth of their youngest son, Archie, in 1875. Other researchers give the date of 8 Feb 1877, but records to confirm this are not available.

Catherine is listed as “Ann'' in later records, and the original Callin Family History refers to her as “Ann Ohlin”. After marrying, John and Ann lived in Vermillion, Ashland County, Ohio. They had a daughter in 1882, and after a few more years in Ohio, it would seem Ann prevailed upon John to move to Frankfort, in Clinton County, Indiana. They probably made this move around 1890.

John died on 24 Dec 1907 at the age of 57 and was buried with his sister and his nephew in Ashland Cemetery in Ashland County, Ohio. Ann went and lived with her daughters; first with the Doty family, where she was listed in their home in Frankfort in 1910, and then later with her daughter, Jeannette Ohl Peter, in Madison, also Clinton County, Indiana, in 1920. Ann died on 18 Aug 1922 at the age of 74 and was buried in Fairhaven Cemetery in Mulberry, Clinton County, Indiana.

John F Callin and Catherine Ann Steigerwalt had one child:

212 i. Estella Barbara Callin, born 3 Feb 1882, Ashland, Ashland County, Ohio; married William Arthur Doty, 23 Apr 1902, Clinton County, Indiana; died 2 Apr 1960, Frankfort, Clinton County, Indiana.
