CFH First Draft: John Dancer Ferguson

John Dancer Ferguson is the 51st person in a descendant report beginning with the earliest known ancestor of our Callin family, (1.) James Callin. This descendant report uses the Register Style of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society.

Fourth Generation

51. John Dancer Ferguson (Eliza Callin-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 21 Aug 1848 in Ohio and after his family moved the following year, he grew up in Jackson, De Kalb County, Indiana. John and Lovina Reed were married on 9 Nov 1871 in De Kalb County.

Lovina Reed was the daughter of George Washington Reed and Clarinda "Clara" Trindall. Lovina was born on 14 Oct 1853 in Ohio, but grew up in Jackson, De Kalb County, after her family moved there around 1858. Her mother died in 1859, and her father married the widowed Elizabeth Belle Ferguson McNabb, the older sister of her eventual husband.

John’s widowed father, James, lived with John, Lovina, and their daughters in Jackson in 1880. After James’s death, John moved the family to Milford, Lagrange County, Indiana, where he was working as a carpenter in 1900. They moved to Union City, De Kalb County, by 1910, and were living in Huntington, Huntington County in 1920.

John died on 13 Mar 1922 at the age of 73 in Riverside, Huntington County, and was buried in Roselawn Cemetery in Auburn, De Kalb, Indiana.

His obituary appeared in The Huntington Herald, 13 Mar 1922, Mon, Page 3:

“John D. Ferguson, age seventy-three years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O.E. Marts, in the Riverside addition, Monday morning, after a serious illness of four weeks. He had been in failing health for some time before being taken seriously ill.

"Mr. Ferguson was born in Ohio on August 23, 1848, and leaves the widow, his daughter, at whose home he died, two sisters, Mrs. William Myers of Auburn, Ind., and Mrs. Daniel Myers of Huntertown, Ind., and two grandchildren. He had lived in Huntington with his daughter about two years.

"Short funeral services will be held at the residence at 9:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, after which the body will be taken to Auburn, where funeral services will be held at the Methodist church at 2 o'clock. Interment will be at Auburn."


After John’s death, Lovina lived at 317 Guilford in Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana. She died there on 5 Feb 1925 at the age of 72 and was buried in Roselawn Cemetery with her husband.


John Dancer Ferguson and Lovina Reed had seven children:


i. Alberta Alice Ferguson (twin) was born about Jan 1872, died on 2 Feb 1872.

ii. Albert Allen Ferguson (twin) was born about Jan 1872 and died on 23 Feb 1872.

183 iii. Dora E. Ferguson, born 3 Jan 1873, Indiana; married Charles Frederick Kinsey, 13 Dec 1890; died 8 Sep 1908, Auburn, De Kalb, Indiana.

iv. Mary Jane Ferguson was born on 11 Mar 1876 and died on 8 Nov 1879 at the age of 3. She was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Auburn, De Kalb County, Indiana.

184 v. Leora B. Ferguson, born 14 Aug 1880; married George W Dancer, 1 Jan 1899, Lagrange, Indiana; died 4 Dec 1899.

185 vi. Kathryn May Ferguson, born 22 Sep 1882, Lagrange, Lagrange, Indiana; married Ora E Martz, 26 Dec 1917, De Kalb, Indiana; died 11 Mar 1951, Huntington, Huntington, Indiana.

vii. Oscar Dale Ferguson was born on 27 Oct 1890 and died on 5 Feb 1891.
