CFH First Draft: James L Ferguson (1841-1907)

James L Ferguson is the 47th person in a descendant report beginning with the earliest known ancestor of our Callin family, (1.) James Callin. This descendant report uses the Register Style of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society.

Fourth Generation

47. James L Ferguson (Eliza Callin-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 17 Oct 1841 in Ohio.  He appeared in his parents’ household in Jackson, De Kalb County, Indiana in 1850 and 1860. James enlisted as a private in Company B, Ohio 11th Infantry Regiment on 20 Jun 1861 and mustered out on 21 Jun 1864.

James L Ferguson and Margaret Ann Walter were married after the war on 9 Apr 1865 in De Kalb County, Indiana. Margaret Ann Walters was born on 19 Nov 1845 in Ohio, the daughter of Joseph Walters (1818–1882) and Sarah Nixon (1818–1888). They lived in Jackson, De Kalb County, in 1870 and 1880. They lived in Union City, De Kalb County, in 1900.

James died on 15 Jun 1907 at the age of 65 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Auburn, De Kalb County, Indiana. Margaret died on 24 Aug 1926 at the age of 80 was buried with her husband.

His obituary from The Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette, 16 Jun 1907, Sun, Page 6:

“AUBURN, Ind., June 15--James L. Ferguson, aged sixty-five years, long one of the well known and prominent farmers of the county, died this forenoon at his home on South Van Buren street in this city from heart disease, with which he had been ill for three years.  He moved to Auburn last March from his farm in Union township. Surviving him are his wife and four children, Joseph, of Tiro, O.; Thomas, who resides on the farm, and Henry Ferguson and Mrs. Mary J. Kosht, of Auburn. The funeral will be held Monday from the Church of God, Rev. I.W. Markley, of Columbia City, and Rev. I.M. Thomas, of this city, officiating.”


Margaret’s obituary from the Garrett Clipper, 26 Aug 1926, Thu, Page 1:

“The death of Mrs. Margaret Ferguson, aged eighty years, took place Tuesday afternoon at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Jennie Kosht of East Seventh street, Auburn. She was sick for a long time with Bright's disease and neuritis and was bedfast two years.

“Surviving are the one daughter, three sons, the Rev. J.W. Ferguson and Thomas Ferguson of northwest of Auburn, and Terry Ferguson of south of Auburn, by a brother, Elmer Walters of south of Auburn, and four sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Jetmore and Sarah Lawhead of Auburn, Mrs. Ella Reed of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Malinda Farver of Fremont, O.”


James L Ferguson and Margaret Ann Walter had six children:


i. Sarah M. Ferguson was born on 5 Nov 1867 in De Kalb County, Indiana. She died on 18 Mar 1881 at the age of 13 was buried in Auburn, De Kalb County, Indiana.

164 ii. Mary Jane Ferguson, born 13 Jul 1868, De Kalb County, Indiana; married Emmett Kosht, 17 Apr 1892, De Kalb County; died 3 Apr 1963, Auburn, De Kalb County.

165 iii. Rev. Joseph Walter Ferguson, born 1 Sep 1871, Auburn, De Kalb County, Indiana; married Cora I Kosht, 1891, De Kalb County; married Delia Hassig, 16 Nov 1927, Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan; died 26 Nov 1963, Auburn, De Kalb, Indiana.

iv. Elmer Ellsworth Ferguson was born on 19 Oct 1875, died on 18 Nov 1875, and was buried in Auburn, De Kalb County, Indiana.

166 v. Terry Victor Ferguson, born 27 Aug 1877, De Kalb, Indiana; married Grace Beatrice Rush, 2 Jun 1900, De Kalb County, Indiana; died 11 Dec 1961, Butler, De Kalb, Indiana.

167 vi. Thomas L Ferguson, born 19 Jun 1880, Jackson Center, De Kalb County, Indiana; married Mary L Jones, 13 Apr 1901, De Kalb County; died 22 Jan 1958, Auburn, De Kalb, Indiana.
