Fourth Generation

44. Elizabeth Belle Ferguson (Eliza Callin-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 11 Jan 1835 in Richland County, Ohio. She grew up there, but moved with her family around 1848 to Jackson, De Kalb, Indiana, where they were in 1850.

Elizabeth and James McNabb were married on 8 Feb 1858 in De Kalb County, Indiana. James McNabb was born about 1834 in Pennsylvania. (As far as the available records can show, he is not related to Belle’s brother-in-law, Reuben McNabb.) After they married, they lived in Spencerville near Cedar Creek, Allen County, Indiana in 1860. James unexpectedly died there on 27 Dec 1860 at the age of 26.

James McNabb and Elizabeth Belle Ferguson had the following child:

150 i. Mary Ellen Florence “Ella” McNabb, born Jan 1859, Indiana; married Jacob Carper, 1875; died 1929.

The widowed Elizabeth Belle Ferguson McNabb and George Washington Reed were married on 27 Mar 1861. George was the son of James C. Reed and Mary Glass, and he was born about 1825 in Ohio. He married his first wife, Clarinda Trindall (1828–1853), on 26 Oct 1847 in De Kalb County, Indiana. She left him with four small children when she died in 1853.

Elizabeth and George farmed near Jackson, De Kalb County, appearing on the census there in 1870. George died on 21 Feb 1874 at the age of 49 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Auburn, DeKalb County. Elizabeth remained in Jackson in 1880. She died on 8 Jun 1896 at the age of 61 and was buried with her husband, George.

According to Belle’s obituary from The Waterloo Press, 18 Jun 1896, Thu, Page 8:

“Elizabeth B. Reed was born in Ashland Co., Ohio, Jan. 1, 1835, and departed this life June 8th, 1896, aged 61 yrs., 5 mos., 7 das. She was married to James McNabb, July 8th, 1857. To this union was born one child, Ella Carper, who survives them. This union was severed by death, Dec 27, 1860. She was married the second time to George W. Reed, Mar. 27, 1861. To this union were born six children, two sons and four daughters, five of whom survive them. In 1850 she came with her parents to DeKalb county, where she has since lived. They moved on their farm in 1867, where they enjoyed life together until death removed her husband. She has lived in the present home for 23 years. She kept the family together, and looked after their welfare. She was a member of the M. E. church until she united with the U. B. church, where she remained until death. She trusted in her Saviour until he said, "It is enough, come up higher." She leaves, to mourn her death, six children, four sisters, three brothers, four step children and nine grandchildren, besides a host of friends.”
