Fourth Generation

39. Amelia A Callin (George-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 16 Mar 1849 in Monroeville, Huron, Ohio. She grew up on her parents’ farm in Ridgefield, Peru Township, Huron County, Ohio.

Amelia A Callin and Charles Henry Horton were married on 8 Nov 1876 in Huron County, Ohio. Charles, son of Chauncey Horton and Nancy Masten, was born on 25 Apr 1845 in New York. He and Amelia lived in Brighton, Lorain County, Ohio.

Amelia died on 3 Dec 1899 at the age of 50 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Painesville, Lake County, Ohio.

Amelia’s obituary was pasted in a family bible and handed down for several generations. It read:

“Mrs. Amelia Callin Horton was born in Monroeville, March 16, 1849. This was her home until her marriage, November 8, 1875, to Mr. C.H. Horton, of Wellington. Here they lived until 1895, when they removed to Painesville and have made their residence at 126 Jackson street.

“Her death occurred Sunday morning, December 3, quite unexpectedly as she was recovering from a severe attack of typhoid fever, when the recurrence of a chronic digestive trouble caused her death, after a painful illness of ten days.

“She left no children and no members of her immediate family, except two brothers living in Huron and Chicago Junction.

“She made confession of the Christian faith by uniting with the Congregational Church at Wellington, and in January of the present year removed her connection to the First Congregational Church in Painesville. Though prevented by delicate health from active participation in the work of the church, she always manifested a deep interest in its welfare. She bore the severest suffering with fortitude and patience and met death with perfect faith and composure. She "knew in whom she had believed."

“Mrs. Horton was a woman of rare sweetness of disposition and beauty of character. Her winning manners drew everyone to her and her loving heart prompted words of kindness and a charitable judgment of all.

“Her husband has the deep sympathy of their many friends in the great bereavement he has sustained.”

Charles married Estella H. Bates (1870–1938) in 1901, and they had two sons: Charles Jr. (1902–1921) and Harland B. (1905–1984). Charles Sr. died on 1 Jan 1923 at the age of 77 and was buried in Painesville, Lake County, Ohio.
