CFH First Draft: Harrison M Campbell

Harrison Campbell is the 41st person in a descendant report beginning with the earliest known ancestor of our Callin family, (1.) James Callin. This descendant report uses the Register Style of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society.

Fourth Generation

41. Harrison M Campbell (Ann Callin-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 8 Dec 1837 in Ohio. He was raised on his family’s farm in Milton, Ashland County, Ohio, where he lived in 1850, and he appeared at home with them in Ashland, Ashland County, in 1860. Harrison enlisted on 15 Sep 1861 and mustered in as a private with Company I, New York 59th Infantry Regiment on 19 Oct 1861. Mustered out on 15 Sep 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia.

Harrison M Campbell and Catherine Hoot were married on 9 Nov 1865 in Ashland County, Ohio. Catherine Hoot, daughter of Nathaniel Hoot (1817–1879) and Margaret Fry (1825–1848), was born in Jul 1846 and grew up in Perry, Ashland County, Ohio, and in Franklin, Richland County. Margaret Fry was Nathaniel Hoot’s second wife; his first wife, Phoebe Onstott, died after the birth of their son, John Bently Hoot. J. B. Hoot married Harrison’s sister, Frances.

After Harrison and Catherine married, they moved to Mill Creek, Morgan County, Missouri. They farmed and raised their large family there. The Callin Family History and the census placed Harrison and Catherine in Tipton, Moniteau County, Missouri in 1910, but they migrated to the Northwest soon after that, and were living in Forest Grove, Washington County, Oregon by 1920.

Harrison died on 27 Dec 1924 at the age of 87 and was buried in Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove. Catherine died on 21 Mar 1930 at the age of 83 and was buried with her husband.


Harrison M Campbell and Catherine Hoot had eight children:


126 i. Walter V Campbell, born abt 1867, Missouri; married Ida M Williamson, 12 Apr 1893, Morgan County, Missouri.

127 ii. Lillian May Campbell, born 9 May 1871, Tipton, Moniteau, Missouri; married George Gillette Weaver, 27 Dec 1887, Morgan County, Missouri; married George Thomas Darland, 10 Apr 1927, Multnomah County, Oregon; died 2 Jun 1946, Beaverton, Washington, Oregon.

128 iii. Mary C Campbell, born Feb 1874, Missouri; married James Aron Hodges, 25 Apr 1896, Jasper, Missouri; died Aug 1947.

129 iv. Nellie Viola Campbell, born 13 Apr 1877, Tipton, Morgan, Missouri; married Earl C De Avonshire, 31 Jul 1907, Morgan County, Missouri; married Jacob H Shearer, abt 1928, Oregon; married William Oscar McConnahay, 5 Jun 1949, Clark, Washington; died 29 Jun 1967, Washington County, Oregon.

130 v. Frances K Campbell, born 16 Mar 1881, Missouri; married Karl Heinrich Potten 5 Nov 1932 in Washington County, Oregon; died 13 Feb 1974, Portland, Multnomah, Oregon.

131 vi. Clyde Cyrus Campbell, born 30 Nov 1883, Tipton, Moniteau, Missouri; died 10 Apr 1953, Multnomah County, Oregon.

132 vii. Earl Delbert Campbell, born 27 Feb 1887, Tipton, Moniteau, Missouri; married Mary Elizabeth Salmon, 6 Feb 1908, Sedalia, Pettis, Missouri; died 22 Dec 1954, Columbia County, Oregon.

133 viii. Earnest Harold Campbell, born 3 Feb 1891, Tipton, Moniteau, Missouri; married Ida Johanna Schlaefli, 10 Oct 1934, Washington County, Oregon; died 20 Sep 1964, Multnomah County, Oregon.
