CFH First Draft: Samuel Walter Scott

Samuel Walter Scott is the 107th person in a descendant report beginning with the earliest known ancestor of our Callin family, (1.) James Callin. This descendant report uses the Register Style of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society.

Fifth Generation

107. Samuel Walter Scott (Cyrus H-4, Sarah Callin-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 12 Sep 1872 in Harrison, Winnebago County, Illinois, and spent part of his childhood on a farm in New Albany, Story County, Iowa, before his family returned to Harrison.

Samuel and Ellen Hamilton Gilmore were married on 22 Nov 1893 in Winnebago County, Illinois. Ellen was the daughter of Irish immigrants Thomas Gilmore (1843–1918) and Margaret Hamilton (1841–1918), born on 30 Apr 1875 in Illinois. She grew up in Harrison, Winnebago County. After they married, Ellen and Samuel ran their farm in Harrison Township and raised their two children, a son and daughter.

Samuel died on 1 Dec 1957 at the age of 85 and  was buried in Shirland Cemetery, Winnebago County, Illinois. His obituary appeared in the Freeport Journal-Standard, Freeport, Illinois, on 2 Dec 1957.

“DURAND--Samuel W. Scott, Harrison, Ill., resident, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ray (Blanch) McMahon about 10:30 a.m. Sunday. He was born Sept. 12, 1872, in Harrison, the son of Cyrus and Mary Scott. He married Ellen Gilmore Nov. 22, 1893 at Harrison. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. McMahon; one son.”

Ellen died on 31 Mar 1960 at the age of 84 and was buried with Samuel in Shirland Cemetery.

Samuel Walter Scott and Ellen Hamilton Gilmore had the following children:

328 i. Walter Samuel Scott, born 14 Dec 1894, Owen Center, Winnebago County, Illinois; married Ethel Mae Seaton, 23 Sep 1922, Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois; died 19 May 1975, Shirland, Winnebago County, Illinois.

329 ii. Blanche Ellen Scott, born 19 July 1897, Winnebago County, Illinois; married Raphael Edward McMahon, 20 Sep 1916, Winnebago County, Illinois; died Sep 1974, Davenport, Scott County, Iowa.
