Third Generation

updated Hugh Callin family
6. Hugh Callin (James "2nd"-2, James "1st"-1) was born about 1803 in Pennsylvania. He may be one of the boys counted in his father’s household in 1820, and appears as head of his own small household in Milton, Richland County, Ohio in 1830. He could likely be the Hugh Callin who appeared in Louisa County, Iowa in 1840, before his brothers and mother moved from Ohio.

According to the Faxon Family History:

George Faxon … m. Feb. 29, 1844, Pamelia Callen, b. March 9, 1828, in Mansfield, Richland county, Ohio, daughter of Hugh and Lucinda (Montgomery) Callen."

County marriage records suggest that Hugh and Lucinda Montgomery might have been married in Richland County, Ohio, abt 1825, lived in Milton (with two small children, one boy and one girl) in 1830. They lived in Louisa County, Iowa, with 5 children (two boys and three girls)  in 1840.

Lucinda Callin appears as head of a household of 3 in Louisa County in 1847, suggesting that Hugh died before that date. She appears in the 1850 Federal Census with two daughters, Narcissa and Louvina, listed immediately above the Faxon family (George and Pamelia) in Fredonia. It is notable that there are three Blake families listed on this page, including two young men named Blake listed in the Callin household as farm laborers. The History of Louisa County, Iowa, states that Hugh Callin "probably lived near the bank of the Iowa river almost due west from Levi Blake's residence."

Lucinda took in her granddaughters, Harriett and Lucinda Faxon, after Pamelia’s death in 1855. They were listed in her household in the 1856 Iowa State Census. By 1860, Louvina had married Thomas Hall, and he was listed as head of the household. That is the last record in which Lucinda Callin appears.

Hugh Callin and Lucinda Montgomery had the following children:

                      i.   Unknown Son Callin was born about 1826 in Milton, Richland County, Ohio.

24         ii.   Pamelia Callin was born about 1826 in Milton, Richland County, Ohio; married George Faxon, 29 Feb 1844; died 30 Oct 1855.

iii.   Narcissa Callin, born about 1832 in Richland County, Ohio.

iv.   Unknown Son Callin, born about 1835.

25         v.   Louvina Callin, born 4 Mar 1840, Iowa; married Thomas R S Hall, 4 Feb 1858, Muscatine County, Iowa; died, 7 Apr 1915, Lafayette, St Louis, Missouri.

This post has been updated since finding the Faxon Family History. Hugh and his brother, Alec (and now, his children) represent one of the few mysteries of this family that I haven't been able to crack - and the evidence that they raised families in Iowa means that an unknown number of additional cousins are out there waiting to be discovered. I have spent a lot of time searching in Ancestry and FamilySearch databases, as well as the local histories of Louisa County and Muscatine County, hoping to find more clues. If you have any suggestions for other avenues to explore, please use the Contact Form and get in touch!
