CFH First Draft: Alice Augusta Sharp Rogers

Alice Augusta Sharp is the 99th person in a descendant report beginning with the earliest known ancestor of our Callin family, (1.) James Callin. This descendant report uses the Register Style of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society.

Fifth Generation

99. Alice Augusta Sharp (Rebecca Scott-4, Sarah Callin-3, John-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 18 July 1859 in Winnebago County, Illinois. Her family lived in West Point, Columbia County, Wisconsin in 1860, but soon returned to Burritt in Winnebago County, where Alice grew up.

Alice married Duncan F Rogers on 7 Apr 1881 in Winnebago County, Illinois. Duncan was the son of Scottish immigrants, William Rodgers (1830–1904) and Helen (or Ellen) McGeachie (1837–1921), born on 17 Jan 1858 in Roscoe, Winnebago County, Illinois. (His mother was the sister of Margaret McGeachie, whose daughter, Katie Drain, married Alice’s brother, William T Sharp.)

Duncan was a vice-president in the Rogers Brothers Galvanizing plant. After farming for a few years, Duncan went into business with his brother, and the couple lived in Rockford. Alice died in Rockford on 28 Oct 1914 at the age of 53 and was interred in the Forest View Abbey Mausoleum in Winnebago County, Illinois. Her obituary ran in the Rockford Morning Star on Thursday, 29 Oct 1914.

“MRS. ALICE ROGERS ANSWERS SUMMONS TO REALMS OF REST

“Widely Beloved Wife Of Duncan F. Rogers Succumbs After Long Illness.

“Mrs. Alice Rogers, wife of Duncan F. Rogers, of 1104 Harlem boulevard, passed away yesterday afternoon at 3:45 o'clock from a complication of ailments with which she had struggled for the last year.

“Alice Augusta Sharp was born in Burritt township July 18, 1859, where she passed her girlhood and was married to Duncan F. Rogers April 7, 1881. Twenty-one years ago they came to Rockford to reside and for the last six years their home has been at 1104 Harlem boulevard.

“Besides the bereaved husband the departed is survived by her mother, Mrs. Rebecca Sharp, of 442 Jilson avenue, a sister, Mrs. Joseph Randerson, of 432 Jilson avenue, and four brothers, William Sharp, of Kansas, Charles Sharp, of Shirland, and Fred and Jesse Sharp, of Rockford.

“Mrs. Rogers was a devout member of the First Presbyterian church and highly regarded by a wide circle of friends. She exemplified her faith in her daily life and made her home a haven of peace and content through the charm of her gentle personality and domestic virtues. Funeral arrangements had not been completed last evening, but will be announced today.”


Duncan remained in Rockford, where he remarried in about 1923. His second wife was Gertrude, born in Wisconsin about 1885. He died in Rockford on 9 Nov 1934 at the age of 74 and was interred with Alice in Forest View Abbey Mausoleum on 11 Nov 1934. His obituary appeared in the Rockford Register-Republic on Friday, 9 Nov 1934.

“Duncan Rogers Is Summoned

“Duncan Rogers, executive of a galvanizing works here for many years well known in industrial circles, died unexpectedly shortly before noon today at his home, 1104 Harlem boulevard.

“Although Mr. Rogers had been ill since Monday, word of his death was a shock to business acquaintances, since his condition had not been regarded as alarming. Death was attributed to heart disease.

“The son of Mr. and Mrs. William Rogers, he was born 76 years ago, Jan. 17, 1858, in Roscoe, and had spent his entire life in Winnebago county. His parents, both of whom were born in Scotland, were early settlers of the county.

“For a number of years Mr. Rogers was engaged in farming, but in 1893 came to Rockford, and with his brother, the late James Rogers, organized the Rogers Brothers corporation, of which he was vice-president and secretary at the time of his death. A devoted golfer, he had been a member of Rockford Country club for the past twenty years. He was also a fisherman and a member of Rockford lodge of Elks.

“Besides his wife, Gertrude, he is survived by two brothers, A. T. Rogers of Batavia, president of the Rogers company, and W. H. Rogers of Freeport, treasurer of the company, and three sisters, Mrs. Maggie Williams, 1025 Mulberry street, Mrs. Fred Brown, 1426 Camp avenue, and Mrs. Blanche Patrick, of Elgin. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.”
