Fifth Generation

78. Minnie A. Callin (Thomas Jefferson-4, Thomas-3, James "2nd"-2, James "1st"-1) was born in June 1872 and grew up in Olivesburg, Richland County, Ohio.

Minnie A. Callin and Wilson C Urich were married on 21 Aug 1890 in Richland County, Ohio. Wilson, son of John Urich (1822–1894) and Jane Comming (1825–1901), was born on 4 Nov 1860 and also grew up in Olivesburg in Weller Township, Richland County, Ohio.

The Urich family farmed in Weller Township and raised their daughters in Mansfield. Wilson was a Republican candidate for County Commissioner in 1928. After he retired in 1937, they lived in Shenandoah in  Blooming Grove Township.

Minnie died on 22 Dec 1954 at the age of 82 in Shenandoah, Richland County, and was buried in the Shenandoah Church Cemetery. Her obituary appeared in the Mansfield News-Journal on 23 Dec 1954:

“SHILOH--Mrs. Minnie A. Urich, 82, died yesterday morning at her home in Shenandoah after a lingering illness. She was a member of the Shenandoah Christian Church and the Women's Fellowship.

“Surviving are her husband, W.C. Urich; two daughters, Mrs. Vera Pollock, of Shenandoah; Mrs. L.D. Reynolds, of Shelby; two grand-children; and seven great grand-children.

“Services will be held in the Shenandoah Christian Church Friday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Charles Spangler officiating, assisted by Rev. Turner Holt, of Galion. Burial will be in the Shenandoah Cemetery. Friends may call at the family residence starting today. The McQuate Funeral Home at Shiloh is in charge of arrangements.”

Wilson became something of a local celebrity as he passed his centennial, frequently profiled for his long history in the County and voting at the age of 100.  He died on 6 Mar 1962 and was buried with his wife in the Shenandoah Church Cemetery. His obituary appeared in the Mansfield News-Journal.

“Richland County's oldest resident, Wilson C. Urich of Shenandoah, died Tuesday in his home. He was 102. He had been ailing since he was injured last year in a fall. He was released last week from Shelby Memorial Hospital. He had voted in almost every election since 1880, the year he became 21. In his later years he used to say voting was his way of celebrating his birthday, Nov. 4, which never was more than four days from election day.

“WAS A TRUSTEE

“He carried his pleasure in voting into public service. He was a trustee in Weller Township for two terms many years ago, he served on a county school board and he helped organize Richland County's first Board of Health.

“He was a lifelong Republican whose proudest moment; perhaps, came Oct. 1, 1960 when he helped welcome Republican Presidential Candidate Richard M. Nixon to Mansfield.

“He was born in a log cabin on the Black Fork Creek in Weller Township, where he attended Taylor's School. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Urich, a farm family had come to Ohio from Lebanon County, Pa.

“He worked for his father until Aug. 27, 1890, when he married Miss Jane Cummins. [Ed. Note: Wilson married Minnie Callin; his mother's name was Jane Cummins.] In 1901 they built their home near the old Urich family farm. Mr. Urich was a farmer until he retired about 30 years ago. Since then he made his home with a daughter, Mrs. Vera Pollock, in Shenandoah.

“LIKED TO GARDEN

“He was active until well past his hundredth birthday. His garden was a Shenandoah showplace. He liked to get up early and work in the sun. "A fellow lasts longer if he keeps going," he said. He was slightly deaf but unusually bright and quick for a man more than a century old. He was a member of Shenandoah Christian Church and a former member of several farm groups.

“Survivors include Mrs. Pollock and another daughter, Mrs. Lester Reynolds, both of Shenandoah; two grand-daughters, and seven great-grandchildren.

“Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Shenandoah Christian Church. The Rev. Frank C. Ferrell, pastor, will be in charge. Burial will be in Shenandoah Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening in the McQuate Funeral Home, Shiloh. The body will be taken Thursday to the Pollock home, where friends may call Thursday afternoon and evening.”
