Fifth Generation
76. George L Callin (Thomas Jefferson-4, Thomas-3, James "2nd"-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 10 Nov 1860 in Olivesburg, Richland County, Ohio, and grew up in Weller Township. George and Catherine Bell "Katie" Imhoff were married on 28 July 1888 in Richland County, Ohio. Katie was born on 4 Feb 1868 in Olivesburg, Richland County, Ohio. We don’t know who her parents were. Two-year-old Katie Imhoff appeared in the household of Charles and Catherine Reckard in Milton Township on the 1870 Census. (There is a 56-year-old Catherine Imhoff listed on that same page of the census in a household with Mary A (26) and Theodosia (19). Their possible connection to 2-year-old Katie remains unknown.)
George and Katie raised their family, including Katie’s son from a previous relationship, Ralph Ryland (1885–1979), in Mansfield. George died there unexpectedly on 21 Jan 1917 at the age of 56. He was buried in Mansfield Cemetery. His obituary ran in the Mansfield News-Journal on 22 Jan 1917.
“DEATH COMES QUICKLY
“George L. Callin Is Victim of Apoplexy Last Evening.
“George L. Callin, of 26 Pleasant avenue, driver for the Albert F. Remy company, died very suddenly at his home last evening, following an attack of heart trouble and a stroke of apoplexy.
“Until Saturday afternoon, Mr. Callin had apparently been in good health. He became ill for a short time while at the Baltimore & Ohio freight depot. Sunday, he went out several times during the day and did not complain very much. In the evening, however, he was not feeling very well and went to bed early. About 9 o'clock, he arose and told his wife that he was going down stairs to sit in a chair for awhile as he had severe pains in his head. About 11 o'clock, Mrs. Callin heard a noise of someone falling. She made an investigation and found her husband lying on the floor unconscious. She summoned her son, but he had breathed only a few times and expired. A physician was summoned, and later Coroner LeBarre also was called.
“Mr. Callin was born at Olivesburg, Nov. 1, 1860, and is survived by his wife, three sons, Jefferson, Trell and Leo, and a daughter, Ruth. Two brothers, Fred, of this city, and Dell, of Ashland, and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Uhrich [sic], of Olivesburg, and Mrs. Moon [sic], of Ganges, also survive him. Private funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. M.L. Jenney, of the First Christian church.”
The widowed Catherine Callin remained in Mansfield, living with her son, Jeff, and daughter Ruth. At some point between 1924 and 1930 she married John Harry Gettleman (1865–1940). Harry moved into the Callin home on Pleasant Avenue.
Harry died on 7 Dec 1940 and was buried in Mansfield Cemetery with his first wife, Mary Etta Reed
(1869–1906). Kate died the following year on 7 Oct 1941 at the age of 73 and was buried in Mansfield Cemetery with George. Her obituary ran in the Mansfield News-Journal, 7 Oct 1941.
“Mrs. Catherine Bell Gettleman, 73, of 120 Pleasant Ave., died at her home early today after a brief illness. She was born in Olivesburg Feb. 4, 1868, and had lived in this vicinity all her life. Through previous marriages, she is survived by a daughter, Miss Ruth Callin; three sons Thomas and Leo Callin of Mansfield and Ralph Rylan of Mansfield.
“Her husband, the late J. Harry Gettleman, died a year ago. Surviving from this marriage are four step daughters, Mrs. Percy Wilson of Los Angeles Calif., Mrs. Roy Ohler and Mrs. Henry Franklin both of Mansfield. Six grandchildren also survive. Finefrock Funeral Home, Mansfield Cemetery.”
George L Callin and Catherine Bell "Katie" Imhoff had the following children:
i. Perry G. Callin was born on 8 Dec 1888 in Weller Township, Richland County, Ohio. He died in 1899 at the age of 11 in Mansfield, Richland County.
ii. Thomas Jefferson Callin was born on 20 Feb 1890 in Olivesburg, Richland County, Ohio, and grew up in Mansfield. Jeff Callin seems to have been happy to remain single, and after his father died he kept his residence with his mother (and later, his step-father) in his childhood home at 26 Pleasant Avenue in Mansfield. Over the course of his adult life, Jeff worked mainly as a driver, sometimes listing his occupation as painter or factory laborer, at times working for the same company as his brother, Trell. We lose sight of him in the records after his mother’s death in 1941.
262 iii. Trell Thornton Callin, born 19 Jan 1892, Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio; married Myrtle Wiegand, 3 May 1915, Richland County, Ohio; died 8 Mar 1935, Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.
263 iv. Leo Homer Callin, born 30 Nov 1893, Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio; married Mildred M. Apger, 6 July 1915, Richland County, Ohio; married Mildred Hartman, 13 July 1925, Monroe County, Michigan; died 24 Mar 1958, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.
264 v. Ruth Alverda Callin, born 14 Aug 1896, Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio; married Virgil Rufus Ward, 12 June 1942, Henry County, Ohio; died 29 Dec 1987, Fredericktown, Knox County, Ohio.
