CFH First Draft: Mary Elvina Walker Terry

Mary Elvina Walker is the 87th person in a descendant report beginning with the earliest known ancestor of our Callin family, (1.) James Callin. This descendant report uses the Register Style of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society.

Fifth Generation

87. Mary Elvina Walker (Huldah Montgomery-4, Sarah Callin-3, James "2nd"-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 18 May 1868 and grew up in Rochester, Fulton County, Indiana. Her older sister, Clara, was 16 years old when Mary was born; Mary was four when Clara married. Mary and Samuel Percy Terry were married on 12 Oct 1887 in Fulton County, Indiana.

Samuel, son of Samuel S Terry (1825–1893) and Sarah J McCloud (1831–1883), was born on 15 May 1861 in Indiana. Samuel's father was a physician who received his commission as an officer in Company S, Indiana 73rd Infantry Regiment on 27 September 1862, serving as an assistant surgeon until he was promoted to full surgeon on 29 January 1863. The younger Samuel followed in his father's profession, graduating from Notre Dame College in 1882 and practicing in Rochester in 1900. During the 1900s, the Terry family moved to Alameda County, California, where Dr. Terry was in practice in 1910. He also served as an examining surgeon in the United States Dept of the Interior.

Dr. Terry died on 5 Nov 1936 at the age of 75 in Alameda, Alameda County, California, and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland. His obituary ran in the Oakland Tribune on 7 Nov 1936.

“ALAMEDA, Nov. 7. Funeral services were held today for Dr. Samuel P. Terry, 75, of Alameda, who died at his home yesterday following a long illness. Doctor Terry, who lived at 1834 San Jose Avenue, had resided in Alameda for 30 years. He came here from Indiana. A graduate of Notre Dame College in 1882, Doctor Terry later served on the board of trustees and was a lecturer at the Central College of Physicians and Surgeons. He also served as United States examining surgeon in the Dept of the Interior. Surviving Doctor Terry are his widow, Mrs. Mary E. Terry; two sons, Samuel and Frederick, and a daughter, Mrs. J. L. Rowe. He was a member of the Alameda Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, The Knight Templars, Scottish Rite, Eastern Star and the Knights of Pythias. Services today were under the auspices of the Oak Grove Chapter of the Masonic Lodge at Fowler-Anderson Chapel.”


Mary remained in Alameda and died there on 8 Apr 1957 at the age of 88. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery with her husband.


Samuel Percy Terry and Mary Elvina Walker had the following children:


285 i. Lillian Terry, born 1 Nov 1888, Indiana; married Eugene D Painter, 22 Jan 1911, San Joaquin County, California; married James Roy Rowe, 27 Mar 1921, Alameda County, California; died 23 Oct 1972, Alameda County, California.

286 ii. Samuel Walker Terry, born 9 Feb 1894, Rochester, Fulton County, Indiana; died 10 Aug 1964, Hayward, Alameda County, California.

287 iii. Frederick Percy Terry, born 19 Mar 1896, Rochester, Fulton County, Indiana; married Marion Adelaide McCormick, 9 Oct 1924, Alameda County, California; died 27 Sep 1986, Alameda County, California.
