Fifth Generation

77. Delbert Dean Callin (Thomas Jefferson-4, Thomas-3, James "2nd"-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 9 Aug 1863 and grew up in Weller Township and Olivesburg, Richland County, Ohio.

Delbert and Hettie A Stull were married on 3 June 1890 in Morrow County, Ohio. Hettie, daughter of Frederick Stull (1830–1890) and Sarah Retinger (1835–1879), was born on 18 Mar 1866 in Morrow County, Ohio. She grew up in Troy and Steam Corners. Hettie died on 30 Aug 1891 at age 25 and was buried in Haldeman Cemetery in Morrow County, Ohio.

Delbert and Mary E Coleman were married in 1892. Mary was the daughter of John Coleman (1831–1900) and Magdalena Cassel (1831–1905), born on 7 July 1872 in Butler Township, Richland County, Ohio, where she grew up.

Del was a blacksmith and he and Mary lived in Butler, Richland County, and Sharon, Richland County, where they raised their children. In 1914, Mary filed for divorce, charging Del with drunkenness and failure to provide, claiming that their daughter, Ruby, had to work to support the family from 15, and Martin from the age of 10.

After the divorce, Del lived in Ashland, Ashland County. He died on 6 Feb 1934 at the age of 70 and was buried in Ashland Cemetery, Ashland County, Ohio.

Mary remained in Ashland for a few years, but moved to Akron around 1922. Even before Del’s death, she listed her status as “widowed” in the census records. She died on 1 Mar 1962 at the age of 89 in Akron, Summit County, Ohio.

Mary’s obituary was brief, but ran in The Akron Beacon Journal on 2 Mar 1962:

“MRS. MARY CALLIN Services for Mrs. Mary Coleman Callin, 89, of 55 S. Balch St., will be at 1 p. m. Saturday at the Adams Funeral Home. She died Wednesday in her home after a long illness. Mrs. Callin leaves a son, Martin of Akron; a daughter, Ruby of Akron; a grandchild, and four great grandchildren. Friends may call anytime at the funeral home. Graveside rites will follow Saturday at Ashland.”

Delbert Dean Callin and Mary E Coleman had the following children:

i. Ruby M Callin was born on 5 Oct 1892 in Ohio. She went to work at an early age to support her family. In 1908, she was run over by a car at Casino park. Six years later, she required an operation for “tuberculosis of the spine,” which was reportedly an effect of the accident. Ruby moved to Akron with her mother and brothers in 1922. She moved to New Mexico, probably at the same time as her brother, after their mother’s death in 1962. Ruby died in May 1984 at the age of 91 in Los Lunas, Valencia County, New Mexico. Her obituary appeared in The Albuquerque Journal on 19 May 1984.

CALLIN-Ms. Ruby M. Callin, age 92 and a resident of Los Lunas, died Thursday at her home following an illness. She is survived by a niece, Vivian Henderson, of Los Lunas, four great-Nephews and great-nieces, Mary Cotch, Anthony Reed, Sue Potvine and Timothy Reed; and five great-great Nieces and Nephews. Cremation was in Fairview Park Crematory. The Family prefers memorials to American Diabetes Association, 525 San Pedro N.E . 87108.
