CFH First Draft: Thomas Callin

This post is part of an ongoing series, sharing the first draft of my Revised Callin Family History

Thomas Callin is the 5th person in a descendant report beginning with the earliest known ancestor of our Callin family, (1.) James Callin. This descendant report uses the Register Style of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society.

Third Generation

5. Thomas Callin (James "2nd"-2, James "1st"-1) was born about 1801 in Pennsylvania, and lived in Milton, Richland County, Ohio in 1830 and 1840. Thomas died about 1843 at the age of 42 in Olivesburg, Richland, Ohio, where he was buried.    

Thomas Callin and Nancy Burgett were married on 20 Nov 1823 in Richland County, Ohio. Nancy Burgett was born about 1804 in Ohio. After her husband’s death, she remained in Olivesburg in Weller Township, Richland County, Ohio.    

She died on 27 Nov 1871 at the age of 67 and was buried in Olivesburg. 

Thomas Callin and Nancy Burgett had ten children:

i. James Callin was born about 1826 in Ohio. The Callin Family History lists him as “Jane Callin,” but James appears in the Census records living with his mother in Weller Township, Richland County, Ohio in 1850, 1860, and 1870. He died in 1879 at the age of 56.  

ii. George Callin was born in 1825 in Ohio.  He lived in Vermillion, Ashland County, Ohio, in 1860. He enlisted in the 178th Regiment of the Ohio Infantry on 2 Sep 1864 and died in 1865, according to the Callin Family History, “shot by a rebel sharpshooter while on pickete [sic] duty in North Carolina.”   

21 iii. Thomas Jefferson Callin, born Jul 1827, Ohio; married Susannah (Susan) Egner, 16 Dec 1848, Richland, Ohio; died 24 May 1902, Olivesburg, Richland, Ohio.

iv. Caroline Callin was born about 1829, died at 18 years of age on 3 Nov 1847 and was buried in Olivesburg. 

v. Sally Callin was born about 1830, died about 1844 and was buried in Olivesburg. 

22 vi. Marquis Callin, born abt 1833, Ohio; married Caroline Snyder, 1870; died sometime before publication of The Callin Family History in 1911.

vii. Mary Ann Callin was born 8 Feb 1833 in Ohio; she died at 18 years of age on 19 Mar 1851, and was buried in Olivesburg. 

viii. Able Callin was born in 1838, died in 1839, and was buried in Olivesburg. 

ix. Emoline Callin was born about 1839, died at 11 years of age on 23 Jun 1850, and was buried in Olivesburg. 

x. Elliott Callin was born on 9 Mar 1841 in Ohio. He grew up in Weller, Richland, Ohio, enlisted in the 26th Ohio Infantry Regt. in Jul 1861 and died on 16 Nov 1865 at the age of 24 in Camp Chase near Columbus, Franklin, Ohio.
