Third Generation

9.  James Callin (James "2nd"-2, James "1st"-1) was born about 1810, either in Pennsylvania or Ohio. James married his cousin (17.) Margaret Jane Callin on 9 Sep 1841 in Richland, Ohio. After they married, James decided to follow his mother and his older brother Alec westward, to Iowa, where he died in 1844 at the age of 34.

Margaret Jane Callin, daughter of John Callin and Elizabeth Simon, was born in 1819 in Ohio. Per The Callin Family History:

"James Callin with his wife and baby moved to Iowa where he died in 1844. William Callin, brother of Margret, went to Iowa and brought her and the two above named children home to Ashland Co. after her husband's death."

Margaret died in 1847 at the age of 28 in Ashland County, Ohio, leaving behind two orphan boys. Considering the order of events, it seems likely that Margaret was pregnant with her younger son when her husband died. We do not have any explanation why Margaret’s brother had to make the 870-mile round-trip journey to bring her and her boys back to Ohio, though the loss of her husband (1844) and aunt Mary (1846) may have left her without close family in Iowa to turn to. Also, it is not clear where the two boys went to live after Margaret’s death; one went to live with a family named Day in New London, Huron County, according to The Callin Family History, but neither appears in the census records in 1850. Two of her older sisters had moved further west by then, and her remaining family had large numbers of small children, so they may not have been able to take in two more small boys. It may also be that the family did not approve of the marriage of two cousins. If that was a reason no one in the family was willing to raise the boys, there is no evidence of that kind of disapproval in the available text.

James Callin and Margaret Jane Callin had two children:

i. Warren Callin was born in 1842. He enlisted in the 25th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1861. He died at Cheat Mountain, West Virginia about 1862 at the age of 20.

Per the Callin Family History, Warren “Had been on a scout; only sick one hour. It is supposed he died from drinking poisoned milk. He was a musician and wherever he went, his violin went, and when in camp he drew crowds to hear him play. It is said no man in the regiment equaled him in strength, his soldierly qualities won the confidence of his colonel and he was made Scout. His kind heart and sweet disposition endeared him to all his comrades. The whole regiment mourned his death.”

27 ii. William Callin, born 30 Mar 1845, Iowa; married Theodocia Johnston, 6 Aug 1868, Lorain, Ohio; died 19 Mar 1907, Rochester, Lorain, Ohio.
