Fifth Generation
80. Harriett Marie Faxon (Pamelia Callin-4, Hugh-3, James-2, James-1) was born on 15 Apr 1846 in Fredonia, Louisa County, Iowa.
Harriett married Henry
Clay Montgomery, 6 Apr 1865, Fulton County, Indiana. Henry was the son of
Benjamin Montgomery (1807–1846) and Rebecca Davidson (1813–1896), born on 23
Oct 1839 and raised in New Castle, Fulton County, Indiana. Henry set out for
California as a young man, working as a blacksmith in Union, El Dorado County,
in 1860. He enlisted in Company F of the 4th Regiment, California Infantry of
the Union Army. (It should be noted that
cousin, (21.) Callin Montgomery was a private in that same company during the
Civil War.)
Henry and Harriett lived in Bourbon, Marshall County, Indiana,
where their elder son was born, then moved to Tippecanoe, Marshall County.
Henry died on 7 Jun 1873 in Tippecanoe and was buried in Reichter Cemetery in
Talma, Fulton County, Indiana. News of his death was reported in the Rochester Union Spy on 12 Jun 1873.
“MAN DROWNED. A man named
CLAY MONTGOMERY, a cousin of the Montgomerys of this county, was drowned in the
Tippecanoe River, at Tippecanoetown on Saturday last. He had been fishing, and
his hook got entangled in some brush in the water. Deceased was an expert
swimmer, and rather than break the hook, he stripped off his clothes and dived
down to unfasten it. The spectators present saw that he did not rise again, and
went to his aid. He was found in ten feet of water, sitting or squatting on the
bottom, every muscle rigid, and evidently the victim of cramp. Every effort was
made to resuscitate him, but all in vain. No water was found in the body a
remarkable circumstance, truly - and one that should have encouraged
long-continued efforts to restore life. The efforts made warmed the body and
relaxed the muscles, but were otherwise unsuccessful. Deceased was about 27
years of age.”
Harriett Marie Faxon and Henry Clay Montgomery had the following children:
269 i. Benjamin
Ellsworth Montgomery,
born 29 Jan 1866, Bourbon, Marshall, Indiana; married Sarah Jane Scott, 21 Dec 1895, Knox, Starke, Indiana; married Jennie R Owens, 22 Oct 1910, Porter
County, Indiana; died 23 Sep 1930, Gary, Lake, Indiana.
ii. Eddie Faxon Montgomery, born 2 Sep 1870, Tippecanoe, Tippecanoe,
Indiana; died 21 Oct 1931, Gary, Lake, Indiana.
270 iii. Florence
Amelia Montgomery,
born 20 Aug 1873, Tippecanoe, Tippecanoe, Indiana; married John W Stevenson, 19 Oct 1895, Porter County, Indiana; died 7 Aug
1913, Knox, Starke, Indiana.
Florence was born just weeks after Henry’s death. Harriett
married William King on 29 Jun 1875.
They lived in Tippecanoe in 1880, then moved to Porter County, Indiana.
Harriett died on 25 Jan 1914 in Wheeler, Porter County, Indiana,
and was buried in Janes Cemetery in Porter County.
