CFH First Draft: Lydia Callin Clark

Lydia Minerva Callin is the 120th person in a descendant report beginning with the earliest known ancestor of our Callin family, (1.) James Callin. This descendant report uses the Register Style of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society.

Fifth Generation

120. Lydia Minerva Callin (William H-4, George-3, John-2, James-1) was born on 8 Feb 1869 and grew up in Richmond, Huron County, Ohio.

Lydia married Charles Lincoln Clark on 8 Aug 1889 in Huron County, Ohio. Charles was the 5th son (and 6th child) of Alexander W Clark (1827–1889) and Almira A. Clark (1837–1913). While his parents bore the same surname, there is no indication that they were otherwise related. Charles was born on 24 Jan 1866 and grew up in Richmond, Huron County, Ohio.

            Charles and Lydia farmed and raised their family in New Haven, Huron County, Ohio. He died in a traffic accident on 15 Apr 1937 at age 71 in Willard, and was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in New Haven. His death was reported in The Sandusky Register on 16 Apr 1937.

“New Haven Farmer Was Struck By Automobile.

“WILLARD, April 16--(Special)--Charles L. Clark, 71, prominent New Haven-tp farmer, died in Municipal Hospital here today at 3 p.m. from injuries received Wednesday when struck by an automobile while crossing the road in front of his home. He was going to the mailbox when the accident occurred. According to the attending physician, Mr. Clark died from shock and internal injuries. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church and prominent in many activities. Mr. Clark was born in Richmond-tp, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Clark. Surviving are his widow, the former Lydia Callin; two sons, Boyd, New Haven-tp, and Raymond, Willard; four daughters, Mrs. Raymond Wheeelr [sic] and Mrs. Robert Smith, both of Willard; Mrs. Charles Crouch, Marago [sic], and Miss Edith Clark, a teacher in the college of Los Angeles; one brother, W.S. Clark, New Haven-tp, and nine grandchildren. Fink Funeral Home has charge of funeral arrangements not yet completed.”

Lydia only survived Charles by a few years. She died on 7 Jan 1943 at age 73 in Willard, and was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery with Charles. Her obituary appeared in the Mansfield News-Journal on 8 Jan 1943.

“Rites For Mrs. Lydia Clark To Be At Willard Saturday.

“WILLARD--Funeral services for Mrs. Lydia Callin Clark, 75, who died Thursday noon in Municipal hospital, will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Fink funeral home. Rev. Homer A. Neff, pastor of the Presbyterian church, will officiate. Burial will be in the New Haven cemetery. Active in Social and church affairs in the Willard community, Mrs. Clark formerly headed the Willard Federated clubs. She was the widow of Charles Clark. Surviving are two sons, Boyd and Raymond of New Haven township; and three daughters, Mrs. Robert Smith of Willard, Mrs. Charles Crouch of Harrison, O., and Miss Edith Clark, Los Angeles, Calif.”

Charles Lincoln Clark and Lydia Minerva Callin had the following children:

       385          i.   Boyd Harold Clark, born 16 Feb 1891, Ohio; married Lelah C Reed, 28 Aug 1912, Huron County, Ohio; died 9 Mar 1979, Lakeland, Polk County, Florida.

       386         ii.   Evelyn Marie Clark, born 29 Nov 1893, Willard, Huron County, Ohio; married Raymond Allen Wheeler, 17 May 1919, Huron County, Ohio; died 29 Dec 1940, Willard, Huron County, Ohio.

       387        iii.   Ethel May Clark, born 8 Aug 1895, Willard, Huron County, Ohio; married Robert Volka Smith, 24 Jan 1917, Willard; died 4 Mar 1972, Willard.

       388        iv.   Charles Raymond Clark, born 17 Oct 1897, Ohio; married Florence B Wilson, 22 June 1920, Huron County, Ohio, married Marion L Frederick abt 1938; died 18 Feb 1966, Willard, Huron County, Ohio.

                     v.   Edith M Clark was born on 18 Aug 1899 in Willard, Huron County, Ohio. She was a teacher who moved out to the Los Angeles area in the early 1930s. She taught physical education at Los Angeles Junior College for many years, and served as head of the Los Angeles City College. In the 1950s she moved to Palm Springs to be near her sister, Mildred Crouch. She died on 11 May 1972 at age 72 in Palm Springs, Riverside County, California. She was buried in Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City, Riverside County, California.

       389        vi.   Mildred Jeannette Clark, born 10 Dec 1906, New Haven, Huron County, Ohio; married Charles B. Crouch, 22 May 1929, Norwalk, Huron County, Ohio; died 19 Aug 1994, Willard, Huron County, Ohio.
