CFH First Draft: Grace Callin Ritz

Grace Mabel Callin is the 121st person in a descendant report beginning with the earliest known ancestor of our Callin family, (1.) James Callin. This descendant report uses the Register Style of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society.

Fifth Generation

121. Grace Mabel Callin (William H-4, George-3, John-2, James-1) was born on 5 Jan 1880 in Richmond, Huron County, Ohio, where she grew up on her father’s farm. Grace married William Henry Ritz on 3 Apr 1901 in Huron County, Ohio. William was the son of George William Ritz (1847–1931) and Mary Ann Resh (1849–1883). He was born on 10 June 1873, and also grew up in Huron County, Ohio, in Norwich and Richmond.

            Grace and William farmed in Richmond and raised their daughters there. William died on 7 Dec 1952 at age 79 and was buried in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Willard, Huron County, Ohio. His obituary ran in the Mansfield News-Journal on 8 Dec 1952.

“WILLARD--William H. Rtiz [sic], 79, died yesterday afternoon at his home on the Grange road west of Willard. He had been ill about a year. Mr. Ritz was born June 10, 1873 in Norwich Township, and had lived in this community all his life. He was a retired farmer and carpenter. He belonged to the Willard Trinity Lutheran church and the Willard Grange. Surviving are his wife Grace; two daughters, Mrs. Wade Smeltz and Mrs. Vance Conkle, both of Willard; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren; three brothers, Edward and Fred both of Attica; and Gust, of Willard. Friends may call at the home until Wednesday afternoon when services will be held at 2:30 at Trinity Lutheran church here with Rev. G.C. Heffelfinger officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran cemetery in Richmond Township. Secor funeral home is in charge of arrangements.”

 Grace died on 27 Oct 1955 at age 75 in Willard, and was buried with her husband. Her daughter, Gertrude, administered the estate.

William Henry Ritz and Grace M Callin had the following children:

       390          i.   Gertrude Louisa Ritz, born 5 Apr 1905, Richmond, Huron County, Ohio; married Wade Monroe Smeltz, 12 June 1922, Huron County, Ohio; died 30 Aug 1995, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

       391         ii.   Vera Lucille Ritz, born 5 Sep 1913, Jefferson, Ashtabula County, Ohio; married Richard Vance Conkle, 14 Dec 1930, Huron County, Ohio; died 12 Jan 1998, Willard, Huron County, Ohio.
