Fourth Generation

28. Mary "Polly" Montgomery (Sarah Callin-3, James “2nd-2, James “1st”-1) was born 23 Dec 1830 in Ohio.

She married John Houston on 8 Aug 1849 in Richland County, Ohio. John was the son of Robert Houston Sr (1798–1863) and Sarah Owens (1804–1880), born on 27 July 1827 in Ohio. He and Polly farmed near Adario in Butler Township, and he was a lawyer there. He died on 14 Sep 1889 and was buried in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery in Rochester, Fulton County, Indiana. His obituary was published in The Rochester Sentinel on 18 Sep 1889.

“DIED - Another one of Fulton county's most honorable and highly respected citizens, passed to the great Beyond Sunday evening in the demise of John Houston. For several months deceased had been a sufferer from paralysis, and when he was stricken down for the third time Wednesday, the fatal work of the destroyer was then apparent to all, and the efforts of a devoted family and skilled physician were all bent to make his last hours on earth as comfortable as human efforts could afford. John Houston was born in Richland county, Ohio, July 27, 1827, married Mary Montgomery August 23, 1849, and moved to Fulton county in 1883, where he has since resided on his farm four miles northeast of this city. A grief stricken wife and four children survive to mourn the loss of a true christian husband and indulgent father. Deceased was an active member of the Methodist church for many years, and his daily walks were universally admired by his neighbors and friends, for their honesty of purpose and noble intents. The funeral services were held at the family residence Monday afternoon conducted by Revs. Delp and Burch, after which an immense cortege conducted the remains to Odd Fellows cemetery, where they were deposited in their final resting place.”

Mary remained in Rochester for a time before moving in with her daughter, Izora, and her family in Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana. She died there on 8 Jan 1926 and was buried with John in the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Her obituary was published in The Rochester News-Sentinel on 8 Jan 1926.

"Mrs. Mary Houston, age 95, formerly of here, died Friday morning at the Goshen, Ind., home of her sister [sic - should read "daughter"], Mrs. Allen Sheets. She had been ill for some time. She had lived in Goshen for six years. Mrs. Houston was the widow of John Houston. She was a native of Richland county, Ohio. Two other sisters [sic - "daughters"], two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a foster brother survive her. The sisters [sic - "daughters"] are Mrs. J. M. Ford, of Ashland, Ohio, and Miss Nan [- - - -] of Rochester. The foster-brother is Benjamin Crabbs of Crawfordsville. The funeral will be held Monday at the Goshen home, and at 1:30 p.m. in the Rochester Methodist church. Burial will be in Rochester."

Mary Montgomery and John Houston had the following children:
