70. Commodore “Com” Wilson Montgomery (Theodore-4, Elizabeth Callen-3, James "2nd"-2, James "1st"-1) was born on 11 Dec 1854, just after his family returned from their adventure in California. He grew up on the farm his father established on the outskirts of Rochester, Fulton County, Indiana, and he attended the local schools, where he did well. He even served as a teacher for seven years.

On 7 June 1877, he married Alla M Shoup in Fulton County. Alla was born in Independence, Missouri, in Aug 1855, daughter of John R Shoup (1828–1901) and Helen M. "Nellie" Barrett (1828–1905). Her family relocated to Indiana after the Civil War.

Com was one of the foremost farmers in the county; he was active in the Grange, a director for several years in the Agricultural and Fair Society, secretary of the Fulton County Anti Horse Thief Society, Vice-president of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Co., and always prominent in Farmers' Institute work.

Com was stricken with a fatal form of peritonitis which ended his life on 26 Mar 1904 at the age of 49. He was buried in Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Alla moved to Long Beach, California, in 1913 to be near several of her siblings and children, and she died there on 17 Aug 1939. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Los Angeles County, California. Alla’s obituary was published in The Rochester News-Sentinel on Thursday, 24 Aug 1939.

“Relatives in this city have received word of the death of Mrs. Alla M. Montgomery, aged 88, which occurred at her home in Long Beach, Cal., Aug 17. Death was due to infirmities incident to old age.

“The deceased was the widow of the late Commodore Montgomery, who long resided on a farm a mile west of this city in the Burton Road. She was born in Independence, Mo., and had lived in Long Beach since 1913, moving to the California city from Rochester. She was a member of the Presbyterian church.

“Survivors are two sins, Guy D. Montgomery, Los Angeles, Cal., and Wilson Montgomery, Chicago, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Bloom, Oxnard, Cal.; Mrs. Fred Hoffman, Long Beach, Cal.; and Mrs. Lettie Hoover, in West Virginia; and a brother, Charles Shoup, of San Francisco, Cal.

“Several children in addition to the husband preceded Mrs. Montgomery in death. They were Robert Montgomery, Cincinnati, Ohio; Charles Montgomery, Jacksonville, Fla.; Mrs. Edward Murphy of this city; Dora and Hugh, who died in infancy.

“Funeral services were held in Long Beach with interment there on Aug 19th.”
